About Us
Susan J. Getgood, Principal
Susan Getgood has been involved in online marketing since the early 90s, and watched the web evolve from the first browsers to the interactive communities we participate in today. Since 2004, her firm GetGood Strategic Marketing has been advising organizations of all shapes and sizes on integrated social media and marketing strategies that will help them meet their customers online, build their brands and drive revenue. Prior to that, Susan was Senior Vice President of Marketing at Internet software company SurfControl. Her professional blog is Marketing Roadmaps. She also writes a personal photo blog, Snapshot Chronicles and contributes to a number of group blogs. Susan was named a Fellow of the Society for New Communications Research in 2008 and speaks regularly at social media conferences like BlogHer and New Comm Forum.
Some of the highlights of her corporate career include:
- Launched the Cyber Patrol brand and established it as the #1 Web filter used by families and schools worldwide, and by AOL, AT&T, CompuServe, Novell and others to protect their customers.
- Achieved a 20% market share (top of the market) for SurfControl’s Web filter software and grew the E-mail Filter 94% in its first full year on the market, nearly double the segment growth (57%) and increasing market share from 2% to 4.4% within a highly fragmented market that was just beginning consolidation.
- Revitalized an acquired division (Cyber Patrol) and presented a business case that led to its sale to JSB/SurfControl for $100 million, nearly 10x what The Learning Company had paid when it acquired the unit.
- Led PR strategies for Cyber Patrol, The Learning Company and SurfControl that resulted in millions of people per month learning about the respective companies and their products in print, broadcast and online, including the NY Times, CNN, USA Today, Reuters, Associated Press, Investor’s Business Daily, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, IDG News Service, Computer Reseller News, C/net, Network World, Network Computing, CBS and MSNBC.
- Defended the Cyber Patrol intellectual property in federal court after two hackers reversed engineered the product (prohibited in the license agreement) and published their hack on web sites worldwide. Managed the international PR around the lawsuit to focus on the business aspects of the case and the violation of intellectual property rights. Prevailed in court and reached a successful settlement with the hackers.
- Testified before Congress and the FTC on Internet safety and privacy, and joined a panel (December, 1997) at the White House Summit on Children’s Safety that discussed Internet filtering issues.

Our Work
HP (Hewlett Packard)
We’ve been working with HP since 2005. Most recently, we developed and executed a blogger outreach program for the launch of the HP Photo Books (Fall 2007). We also handled blogger and online community outreach for HP’s charity auctions of celebrity photos from the 2005 Toronto Film Festival and 2006 Sundance Film Festival. For Sundance 2006, we developed the Backstage at Sundance blog, trained the on-site bloggers and served as blog editor.
GuideMark
We have served as GuideMark’s outsourced marketing department since 2005. Our most recent major project has been the development and launch of a weekly podcast for small and medium businesses called Business Forward.
Santorini Consulting
We developed the firm’s blog Compensation Architect.
Exit Planning Exchange
We developed the website and blog for this new professional association for exit planning professionals. We also provided marketing communications support during the launch.
Maxwell Street Documentary
We supported the marketing communications effort for the documentary films Electrified: The Story of the Maxwell Street Urban Blues and Cheat You Fair: The Story of Maxwell Street including media and blogger outreach, web site development and management, and event planning. We also developed the blog Notes of the Urban Blues.
Caras Training
We developed the company’s blog For the Face of Your Business and provide ad hoc marketing consulting.
Software Secure
We created the firm’s blog Multiple Choice in 2005 and migrated it to a WordPress platform in 2008. We also provide ad hoc social media marketing and blog support.
Bid4Assets
Bid4Assets is an online auction marketplace for high value assets like real estate, jewelry and rare collectibles that demand the marketing support and customer service of a top notch auction house combined with the broad national reach of an online site. We assisted the company with its corporate positioning, messaging and communications.
CamelBak
We did blogger outreach for the soft-launch of the company’s Sustainable Hydration Project in October 2007.
PistolStar
PistolStar is a developer of password management solutions. We helped the company with a customer marketing program and a home page revision, including a substantial re-write of key copy.
Spec.-Ops. Brand
Spec.-Ops. Brand designs and manufactures tactical nylon gear for the military and law enforcement. We supported the company’s marketing communications efforts until the function was brought in-house and also developed the site navigation and copy for its Web site.
SurfControl RiskFilter
Created a global launch program for RiskFilter in Fall 2004. This was SurfControl’s first major new product in two years. Stretched a small budget to cover all launch ads in publications in the U.S. and the U.K., and the creation of a web site that compelled prospects to product trial and purchase.
SurfControl Channel Marketing Program
Grew channel sales by 164% in two years by redefining the channel program and executing it globally (2002-2004). Program was re-launched in 2002 with a global webcast featuring SurfControl’s CEO, an IDC analyst, a reseller customer and Susan Getgood, then SVP Marketing for SurfControl, followed by a global Partners in Security roadshow tour. The relaunched program included a revamped Channel website, including a secure area for resellers. Content areas included marketing resources, sales tools, pricing information, Powerpoint presentations, sales training materials, and templates for marketing programs and advertising.
Cyber Patrol
Launched the Cyber Patrol brand in 1995 and established it as the #1 Web filter used by families and schools worldwide, and by AOL, AT&T, CompuServe, Novell and others to protect their customers. Developed a business plan that led to its sale to JSB/SurfControl for $100 million in 2000. Cyber Patrol is still one of the best known parental control programs, and continues to use the brand identity and design elements we developed in 1995/96. You can visit the current Cyber Patrol home page at www.cyberpatrol.com.

Workshops
Social Media 101 - ½ day introduction to blogs and other new media. Answers the question: what’s social media and why does it matter for my business. This workshop can be tailored to marketing and PR teams, stressing integration of social media with the marketing and PR strategy, or customer service and consumer affairs professions, with a focus on the impact of blogs and communities on customer satisfaction. Can be combined with ½ day social media consulting.
Blogger Relations - This ½ day session for PR and marketing professionals introduces a step-by-step process for successfully working with bloggers. We discuss the anatomy of a bad pitch, whether companies need a blog and the alternatives for monitoring & measurement. The workshop relies heavily on examples and case studies. Can be combined with ½ day social media consulting.
Getting the Message Out - Be Heard, Understood and Remembered - Whether you are talking to a reporter, lobbying a legislator, or speaking to your employees, you need to be heard, understood and remembered. Our one-hour workshop “Getting the Message Out” offers three tips that will help you tell your important message effectively and memorably. When you don’t have time for a fullscale media training session, this is a good jumpstart.
Lead Generation Tactics for Small Business - Two hour session that focuses on practical lead generation tactics. We cover direct mail, search engines, seminars & events and social media. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lead generation challenges to the table for brainstorming/ad hoc consulting.
Five Simple Tips for Improving Your Sales - One of the most common problems in any business – small, medium and large – is the chasm between Sales and Marketing. Whether you have one salesperson or fifty, one person doing marketing or a whole team, each has a different view of the task at hand and who is responsible for what. The most important thing you can do to improve your sales is to close the gap between your sales and marketing teams. The sooner the better, whether you are missing or making your numbers. This two hour workshop will give you five tips for getting these two critical teams on the same page, working together toward the same goals.
All workshops can be customized for your group or company. We occasionally do pro bono seminars for charities and non-profit civic organizations. Call 978 562 5979 or email Susan Getgood for details.

Three Ways to Meet More Customers
1. Make sure your website sells, not tells. We fix non-performing websites, starting with your objectives and ending with a site that delivers the results you need. We work with your Webmaster and designers or, if you want a completely new look, we’ll source a new design firm with you.
2. Don’t miss the social media explosion! If a blog makes sense for your business, we can help. We can teach you to blog or help you talk with the bloggers that make a difference. Don’t know where to begin? Start with one of our workshops or a half-day social media consulting session.
3. Blogs aren’t for everyone. An email newsletter or podcast may be a better way to meet customers and prospects. We can do it for you – design, writing, production and distribution - or set you up with a plan and a template, whichever fits your budget.
